Hacer biblioteca fuera de la biblioteca: la receta de la biblio del Severo Ochoa
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Library of the Severo Ochoa University Hospital has expanded its traditional role to become an active agent of humanisation, sustainability, scientific culture and community cohesion. By linking all its activities to the Sustainable Development Goals, it has established a pioneering model within health sciences libraries, recognised with the CCB Seal (2019) and the REBIUN Good Practices Award (2025). Among its initiatives, “Healthy Walks” stands out: a project originating from the Callejeando working group (BiblioMadSalud) and developed in partnership with the Municipal Archive of Leganés, combining culture, health and social inclusion through urban routes, the “InfoPacientes” programme provides clear, reliable and multilingual educational infographics created jointly with clinical departments, while “BiblioPacientes”—launched during the pandemic—offered emotional support and safe reading materials for isolated patients. The library also promotes scientific and cultural exhibitions, produces specialised user guides, supports institutional research reporting, hosts vocational training students and teaches information literacy and evidence-based medicine to medical students. Through solidarity and environmental campaigns, the library reinforces its commitment to community welfare. This experience demonstrates that a hospital library can drive collaboration, enhance patient literacy, connect with the city and contribute meaningfully to public health.
